Decorating text is less about transforming letters than framing them. A pair of symbols on either side of a word, a rule between two blocks, a repeated border: the effect comes from regularity, not accumulation.
Worth knowing
- Frame symmetrically — the same symbol before and after, in the same number.
- A separator line is better kept discreet: a light rule tires the eye less than a row of stars.
- Count your characters: in a limited bio, every decorative symbol takes space from useful text.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I make a border that holds at every screen size?
- It never quite does: available width varies, and a border sized for a desktop will wrap on mobile. A short border of a few characters survives better than a full line.
- Do decorations get in the way of screen readers?
- Yes, badly. A screen reader announces each symbol of a border one by one before reaching the text. Put decoration after the useful content rather than before it.
