Symbols

Special characters do not transform your text: they sit alongside it. Arrows, stars, frames, currency and maths signs are characters in their own right, dropped between words to punctuate, separate or decorate.

Worth knowing

  • A repeated separator between two ideas structures a bio better than a line break, which often gets lost when pasting.
  • Maths signs work as decoration too: ≠ and ∞ are covered by every system font.
  • Too many symbols in a row turn the line into noise, on screen and for a screen reader alike.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from emoji?
An emoji is rendered in colour by a dedicated font and takes up the space of an image. These symbols are typographic: they follow the colour and size of surrounding text and sit inside the line.
How do I insert a symbol inside a word?
Copy the symbol, place the cursor where you want it and paste. It inserts like any other character, with no automatic space before or after.
