Gaming platforms are the strictest. Xbox and PlayStation limit gamertags to Latin letters, digits and a few signs: a styled tag is rejected at creation. Discord, Steam and Twitch, on the other hand, accept Unicode in the display name.
Worth knowing
- Aim at the display name rather than the login handle, which is nearly always constrained.
- Avoid characters nobody can type: an opponent who wants to add you has to be able to write your tag.
- Upside-down styles and combining characters are often filtered by anti-cheat and moderation systems.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a styled tag get me reported?
- A stack of combining characters spilling over the interface is treated as abuse by several services and can earn a forced rename. A simple style causes no such trouble.
- Why does my tag look different in-game?
- Many games ship their own font covering only part of Unicode. Missing characters are replaced by a box or a question mark, even when the tag is fine on the platform side.
