What is called a “font” here is not one. A font is a file installed on the device reading the text; if your reader lacks it, they see something else. These styles are Unicode characters: the shape lives inside the character itself, so it travels with the text, from phone to computer, from one app to another.
Worth knowing
- Pasted text keeps its appearance even on a device with no particular font installed.
- The trade-off: capitals and accents are not always covered. Check accented uppercase letters before publishing.
- A keyword search will not find styled text — avoid it on anything that needs to stay findable.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my styled text show as empty boxes?
- The device has no glyph for that character and shows a replacement rectangle. It happens more with rare styles (fraktur, double-struck) and on older systems. A more common style, such as bold, solves it.
- Can I use this in a Word document or a résumé?
- Technically yes, but it is a bad idea. Applicant tracking systems read text character by character and will not recognise these letters. For a document, a real bold font gives the same effect without the risk.
